The Mustang Motorsport Racing team headed off to Tassie on Wednesday for the 2012 Targa Wrest Point.
Marty, the Event Chaplin, and Maudie drive the Saleen Mustang S281 Extreme - obviously extreme prayer for everyone’s safety during the event!!
Emma has come back on board again and to navigate. On January 5, Emma and Craig went up to Eildon with the rally notes from Targa High Country to shake out the cobwebs and practice listening and calling through the Targa High Country stages. They stopped off for lunch at the Jamieson Brewery - a great spot!
There are not many service stations out there and, as we turned up the road heading to Jamieson, Craig told Emma they should have just enough to get back to Alexandra… they fell short by 17km - Ha Ha! The RACV said it would be 60 minutes before they could get there, and they were on time - thanks guys - Craig and Emma got home in time for dinner!
Thursday - ReconnaissanceAfter a rough boat crossing overnight and minimal sleep, it was refreshing to climb into the nav seat of the Mustang and drive out into a crisp Tasmanian morning. We stopped for breakfast at the Raspberry farm in Elizabeth Town for breezy with Marty, the Targa chaplain, his wife Maudie and competitors we'd met on the boat over - Diane and Mike who are racing a Subaru WRX.
After a gorgeous breakfast - raspberry hollandaise! - we were back on the road to Hobart for our first day recce.
We looked at each stage of Targa Leg 1 - Lucaston, Tahune, Airwalk, Esperance Coast and Longley. Maybe it was the practice in High country over the new year break with Craig, but today everything was relaxed and we were working as a team. It took a few stops to replenish sugar levels (Craig's 'Golden Gaytime' after listening to Whitney Houston for hours started to make me wonder...) but we got through the day.
We're now refueling at the Fern Tree Tavern before an early night in readiness for another day recce tomorrow. After the crew are fed, now it's the driver's turn to ensure the car is refueled (as I keep reminding Craig after a recent RACV mustang-rescue incident - Navs can't see the fuel gauge!).
Looking forward to another day out tomorrow.
